The Weekend Leader – Samsung dominates European smartphone market despite challenges

Samsung retained its leading position in the European smartphone market in the third quarter (Q3) after largely recovering from its supply issues earlier in the year.

According to a report by Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi, Apple and Oppo have gained significant market share over the past year in the European market.

Xiaomi continued to do well in most European markets while Oppo made good progress in Western Europe, helped by its recent merger with OnePlus.

“realme is one of the fastest growing brands in Europe and has firmly established itself as one of the top five suppliers with strong sales in Russia, Spain and Italy. Vivo is also experiencing rapid growth, albeit from a smaller base, ”said Jan Stryjak, associate director of research. .

The European smartphone market appears to have largely recovered from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, although sales are now affected by the current chip shortage.

Sales for the third quarter of 2021 were only slightly down (1%) compared to the same period last year.

Apple was boosted by the launch of the iPhone 13 towards the end of the quarter.

The end of the quarter was mixed for Xiaomi and Apple. Xiaomi took a hard hit in September due to significant component constraints.

The launch of the iPhone 13 was a huge success for Apple. Despite going on sale in late September, the iPhone 13 appeared to be more popular than last year’s iPhone 12.

“If it can meet demand (which appears to be a challenge in some markets), Apple could well have a record fourth quarter in Europe,” the report notes – IANS
