Osmania University Presents VC Research Awards


Hyderabad: In a historic first, the University of Osmania (OU) recently awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Award for Research Excellence to faculty members at the Tagore Auditorium on the university campus.

The laureates were Dr V Srilatha-Political Science; Dr Bheem Bhukya-Microbiology; Dr KCHE Vidyasagar-Bio Medical Engineering and Dr Harish Gupta-Geology.

Speaking on the occasion, the director of the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi, Professor V Ramgopal Rao, stressed that research is crucial and called for more funding for research in the country.

Research leads to knowledge creation which in turn creates wealth by encouraging tech startups. Furthermore, innovation is possible when faculty members are encouraged to engage in research, he observed.

OU Vice-Chancellor Professor D Ravinder traced the genesis of the idea for the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Prize and said it was crucial that people involved in research and development achieve recognition which is due to them.

He said the OU has produced “leaders” in various fields and not “followers” and urged members to strive to improve the reputation of the University and change the misperceptions of the public.

The chairman of the Telangana State Council for Higher Education, Prof. R Limbadri, appreciated the idea of ​​rewarding researchers at the university, which will boost the morale of others and contribute to society.

The Director of the Fingerprinting and DNA Diagnostic Center, Dr K Thangaraj stressed the need to undertake collaborative research projects involving several institutions.

In his welcome speech, OU Registrar Professor P Laxminarayana stressed the importance of research in universities and the institution of the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Award to recognize research talent.

OU alumnus J Raju donated funds for the prizes. Deans, principals, directors, heads of departments, study council chairs, past guests and faculty members participated in the event.
